Exploring Jamnagar's Heritage: From Pratap Vilas Palace to Victorian Stays
Here is the comprehensive, enriched guide to exploring Jamnagar, written from the perspective of the Hotel Aram team.
Exploring Jamnagar
A City Steeped in Royal History
Jamnagar, the “Jewel of Kathiawar,” offers more than just a glimpse into the past. We have seen this city evolve from the princely state of Nawanagar into a vibrant hub that still holds its royal legacy close. Founded in 1540 by Jam Raval, the streets here are lined with architectural marvels that reflect centuries of Jadeja rule.
For visitors staying at Hotel Aram, our own history is part of this narrative. Our heritage building was established in 1976 and originally belonged to the royal jeweler. Exploring the city’s landmarks feels like a natural continuation of the experience you get within our walls.
Here is our curated guide to the sites that truly matter.

Lakhota Lake and Lakhota Palace
Distance from Hotel Aram: 1.5 km | Best time: Early morning (for peace) or evening (for the vibe)
Lakhota Lake is the undisputed center of Jamnagar’s social life. We recommend starting your walk at the causeway that connects the city to the island palace. This circular reservoir was built by Jam Ranmalji II and serves as a cooling lung for the city.
The Lakhota Palace itself sits on an island in the middle of the lake. It now houses the Museum of Antiquities. You will find a fascinating collection here, including copper plates, medieval pottery, and an impressive armoury of swords and powder flasks used by the royal forces.
Practical Tips for Visitors:
- Museum Timings: Open 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
- The “Wednesday Rule”: The museum is closed every Wednesday and on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. Plan accordingly to avoid a wasted trip.
- Evening Show: A 30-minute Light & Sound show takes place after sunset on weekends.
Pratap Vilas Palace
Distance from Hotel Aram: 3 km | Best time: Morning (for best light on the facade)
Pratap Vilas Palace is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Commissioned by Jam Saheb Ranjitsinhji, it mimics the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata with its three magnificent glass domes. The carvings of flowers, leaves, and birds on the columns are incredibly detailed.
Important Access Information: This is a working administrative site and often hosts military personnel. Entry inside the palace building is generally restricted for tourists. However, the exterior view from the main gates is spectacular and worth the short trip for photography enthusiasts.
You might notice similarities between this palace and Hotel Aram’s own heritage building. Both structures share the Victorian and colonial influences that defined the city’s golden architectural era.
Bala Hanuman Temple
Distance from Hotel Aram: 1 km | Best time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
The Bala Hanuman Temple is small in size but massive in spiritual significance. It holds a Guinness World Record for the continuous chanting of “Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram.” This chant has not stopped for a single second since August 1, 1964.
The Insider Experience: While the temple is open 24 hours, we suggest visiting during the evening Aarti. The energy of the volunteers is highest then. You are welcome to sit and join the chanting for a few minutes. It is a powerful way to disconnect from the noise of daily life.

Darbargadh
Distance from Hotel Aram: 1 km | Best time: Morning (before the markets get too crowded)
Darbargadh was the original royal residence of the Nawanagar rulers. This walled complex is a fusion of Rajput and European styles. Although the 2001 earthquake caused damage to some structures, the intricate stone carvings and jharokhas (balconies) remain stunning.
What to Look For: Walk around the perimeter to see the “Tilamedi.” This is the specific spot where the coronation of the Jams (kings) took place. The surrounding area has morphed into a busy market, offering a stark contrast between the royal past and the commercial present.
Willingdon Crescent
Distance from Hotel Aram: 2 km | Best time: Late afternoon
Willingdon Crescent is perhaps the most photogenic street in Gujarat. Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji built this sweeping arc of buildings to replace a slum area, inspired by European urban planning. The structure features a continuous series of arches that now house shops and offices.
Shopping & Sightseeing:
- The Statue: A bronze statue of Jam Saheb stands in the center of the crescent.
- The Market: This is an excellent place to shop for local brassware and textiles.
- The Architecture: Notice how the two-story structure maintains a uniform facade. It is a rare example of disciplined civic design in an Indian market.
The Flavor of Jamnagar: Local Food
No guide to our city is complete without mentioning its unique snacks. Jamnagar has a distinct culinary identity that you must try.
Dry Fruit Kachori
This is not your standard savoury snack. The “Dry Fruit Kachori” is a sweet and spicy sphere filled with cashews, raisins, and spices.
- Where to try: Jain Vijay Farsan Mart is the most famous spot.
- Pro Tip: These kachoris have a long shelf life. They make excellent gifts to take back home.
Ghughra
This is the favorite street food of locals. It consists of a crispy crust filled with spiced potatoes and served with tangy chutneys.
- Where to try: You will find the best stalls lined up near Lakhota Lake in the evenings.
Jamnagar’s Tie-and-Dye Heritage
Jamnagar is the heart of the Bandhani (tie-and-dye) industry. The water quality here is said to bring out the brightest colors in the dyed fabric.
Where to Go: Head to Chandi Bazaar or Limda Lane. These areas are packed with workshops and showrooms.
How to Spot Authenticity: Ask to see the “uncrushed” fabric. Authentic Bandhani is sold with the ties still in place. You should be able to lift the fabric by pinching one of the tiny thread knots. If the fabric is flat and smooth, it is likely a screen-printed imitation.
Planning Your Heritage Tour
Most of these sites are clustered within a short distance of our hotel. You can easily cover the main highlights in a half-day tour.
Our front desk team can help you organize:
- Guided heritage walks that explain the history behind the stones.
- Auto-rickshaw tours which are the best way to navigate the narrow market lanes.
- Photography tours timed to catch the golden hour at the palaces.
- Custom itineraries if you wish to visit the nearby Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary.
For visitors who want to immerse themselves in Jamnagar’s heritage both inside and outside, Hotel Aram’s Victorian-era building is the perfect base. Book your heritage stay with us and experience a city where history is still very much alive.
