The Perfect Saurashtra Road Trip: Jamnagar, Dwarka, Somnath & Gir

By Hotel Aram Editorial |
Saurashtra road trip route covering Jamnagar, Dwarka, Somnath, and Gir National Park

The Ultimate Saurashtra Circuit

Saurashtra is the cultural heartbeat of Gujarat. You will find ancient spirituality, rare wildlife, and coastal beauty packed into this western peninsula. A road trip here offers a density of experiences that is hard to match elsewhere in India.

We have spent decades helping guests navigate this region from our heritage property. This itinerary covers the most significant sites in a comfortable 5-7 day loop.

We suggest starting and ending in Jamnagar. This city serves as the perfect logistical hub due to its connectivity and infrastructure. Our heritage rooms at Hotel Aram provide a restful anchor before you hit the road.

Day 1-2: Jamnagar

Your journey begins with an exploration of Jamnagar itself. We recommend dedicating your first day to the city’s architectural and cultural landmarks.

Start at the Lakhota Lake and Museum, located on an island in the middle of the ranmal lake. The entry fee is nominal, usually around ₹10 to ₹25 depending on your age group. From there, visit the Bala Hanuman Temple. It holds a Guinness World Record for the continuous chanting of ‘Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram’ since 1 August 1964.

Our team often directs guests to Chandi Bazaar for authentic Bandhani shopping. You will find intricate tie-dye work here that defines the region’s textile heritage.

Dining and Sunset

End your evening with a view of the city skyline. Dinner at 360 Rooftop Restaurant offers both panoramic vistas and a robust menu of local and international cuisines.

On Day 2, prioritize nature. Drive 12 km to the Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary. We advise arriving at sunrise (around 6:30 AM in winter) to see the highest activity of migratory birds.

Quick Facts for Khijadiya:

  • Best Season: October to March
  • Entry Fee: Approx. ₹50 per person (plus camera fees)
  • Key Sightings: Black-necked Stork, Great Crested Grebe, Dalmation Pelican

You can read our detailed breakdown of the sanctuary in our guide to Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary. Spend your afternoon exploring the Marine National Park at Narara, which requires checking the tide tables, or simply relaxing at the hotel.

Stay: Hotel Aram — heritage rooms from ₹2,700/night

Day 3: Jamnagar to Dwarka (145 km, ~3 hours)

Depart Jamnagar after breakfast and head west on NH947. The drive is smooth and takes you through the unique salt pan landscapes of the coast.

Dwarka is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and hums with devotion. We suggest heading straight for the main temple upon arrival to catch the morning darshan.

Must-See in Dwarka

  • Dwarkadhish Temple: This 5-story shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna is the spiritual centre of the town. Electronic items are not allowed inside.
  • Sudarshan Setu: This newly inaugurated cable-stayed bridge connects mainland Okha to Bey Dwarka. It replaces the old mandatory ferry ride for vehicles.
  • Shivrajpur Beach: Located 12 km north of town, this is a Blue Flag certified beach. You can enjoy pristine waters and even try scuba diving here.
  • Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: Visit this site to see one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas and a massive 25-metre statue of Lord Shiva.

Stay: Hotel near Dwarkadhish Temple. Several options exist near the Gomti Ghat.

Day 4: Dwarka to Somnath (230 km, ~4.5 hours)

This leg of the journey follows the NH51 Coastal Highway. You will enjoy stunning views of the Arabian Sea for much of the drive.

We recommend leaving Dwarka by 9:00 AM to reach Somnath by lunchtime. Somnath is home to the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas and stands as a symbol of resilience.

Day 5: Somnath to Gir National Park (45 km, ~1.5 hours)

The drive from the coast to the forest is short but marks a complete change in landscape. Sasan Gir is the only place in the world outside Africa where you can see lions in the wild.

We strongly advise booking your safari permits online at the official government website (girlion.gujarat.gov.in) months in advance. Permits are not sold at the gate.

Safari Options

  • Gir Jungle Trail: This is the core safari experience. You enter the deep forest in an open gypsy.
  • Devalia Safari Park: Also known as the Interpretive Zone. This is a fenced area where lion sightings are almost guaranteed if you miss a permit for the main trail.

Must-Do at Gir

  • Morning Safari: The 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM slot offers the highest chance of spotting big cats on the move.
  • Afternoon Safari: The 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM slot is excellent for golden hour photography.
  • Crocodile Breeding Centre: Located at the Sasan headquarters, this is a fascinating stop for wildlife enthusiasts.

Stay: There are numerous resorts on the periphery of the sanctuary.

Day 6-7: Gir to Jamnagar via Rajkot (190 km, ~4.5 hours)

Your return loop takes you through the historical hubs of Junagadh and Rajkot. We suggest breaking this journey into two segments to explore the rich history along the way.

Stop 1: Junagadh

This ancient fortified city sits at the foot of Mount Girnar.

  • Mahabat Maqbara: This mausoleum features stunning Gothic-Islamic architecture with spiral staircases.
  • Girnar Ropeway: If you have time, take Asia’s longest ropeway to the top of Mount Girnar. The ride takes about 10 minutes.

Stop 2: Rajkot

Located 100 km from Junagadh, this is the commercial capital of Saurashtra.

  • Watson Museum: Gain insight into colonial history and local artifacts.
  • Rotary Dolls Museum: A unique collection of over 1,600 dolls from 93 countries.

Arrive back in Jamnagar for a final night of comfort. Our team will be ready to welcome you back for a celebratory meal at the 360 Rooftop Restaurant.

Road Trip Tips

Successful travel in Gujarat requires a bit of local knowledge. We have compiled these practical tips to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

  1. Alcohol Permit: Gujarat is a dry state. You can obtain a temporary tourist liquor permit online via the E-Permit portal or at designated shops at major airports and hotels if you possess a non-Gujarat ID.
  2. FastTag: Ensure your vehicle has a funded FastTag. Toll plazas are frequent on NH-27 and NH-51.
  3. Best Season: Plan your trip between November and February. Temperatures are pleasant (15°C to 25°C).
  4. Vegetarian Cuisine: Most highway dhabas serve pure vegetarian food. Kathiyawadi Thali is a spicy, garlic-heavy regional specialty you must try.
  5. Safari Booking: Do not rely on agents for Gir. Book directly on the government site 45-60 days prior.
