Top things to do in Jamnagar for a perfect weekend getaway in Gujarat

Your Perfect Jamnagar Weekend

You know how some cities seem to have traded their soul for industrial growth? Jamnagar is the rare exception where massive refineries coexist with a deep-rooted royal heritage. Most travellers pass through here on their way to Dwarka, missing out on a city that was once the “Jewel of Kathiawar.”

We have welcomed guests at Hotel Aram since 1976, and our team has seen Jamnagar transform while keeping its traditions alive. Our heritage building, once home to the royal jeweler, stands as a testament to this history.

This guide isn’t just a list of places; it is a roadmap to experiencing the city like a local. We will walk you through the exact timings for the best views, where to find the legendary dry fruit kachori, and how to navigate the tides at the Marine National Park.

Here are the ten best things to do during a weekend in Jamnagar, curated by our team to help you make the most of your 48 hours.

1. Sunrise at Lakhota Lake

Start your weekend early with a walk around Lakhota Lake (also known as Ranmal Lake). The morning light paints the Lakhota Palace fort in golden tones, and the lake is at its most serene before the city awakens.

We recommend arriving before 7:00 AM, as entry to the walking track is free during these early hours. After 7:00 AM, there is a nominal entry fee of ₹10.

Inside the lake stands the Lakhota Palace and Museum, which houses artifacts dating from the 9th to the 18th century, including pottery, weaponry, and copper plates. If you plan to visit the museum, note that it opens at 10:30 AM and remains closed on Wednesdays and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month.

2. Explore Pratap Vilas Palace

This magnificent Indo-European palace is one of Jamnagar’s architectural masterpieces. While the interior now houses Western Railway offices and is generally restricted to the public, the exterior is a sight to behold.

Our guests often visit the palace gates to admire the fusion of Indian carvings and European domes, which were modelled after the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. You can get excellent photographs of the three glass domes and the sprawling grounds from the main entrance. It serves as a powerful reminder of the reign of His Highness Jam Ranjitsinhji, the cricket legend who built this structure.

3. Visit Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Just 12 km from the city, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers. Over 300 species of migratory and resident birds can be spotted here, making it one of Gujarat’s most important birding destinations and a designated Ramsar site.

Plan your visit between September and March for the best sightings of migratory species like the Black-necked Stork and the Great Crested Grebe.

4. Seek Blessings at Bala Hanuman Temple

Visit the temple that holds a Guinness World Record for continuous Ram Dhun chanting. Since August 1, 1964, devotees have chanted “Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram” 24 hours a day, non-stop.

We suggest visiting during the evening Aarti at 7:00 PM to experience the spiritual energy at its peak. The temple is located on the southeastern edge of Lakhota Lake, making it easy to combine with your evening lake visit. The chanting continues through the night, so you can drop by at any hour to witness this incredible feat of devotion.

5. Discover the Bandhani Heritage

Jamnagar’s tie-and-dye tradition is world-famous. Visit the workshops in the old city to watch artisans create intricate bandhani patterns by hand.

Head straight to Chandi Bazaar, specifically the area near the Jain Temple. Trusted shops like Mahavir Bandhani offer authentic ‘Bandhej’ work, including the famous Gharchola (wedding sarees) and Panetar.

Be careful when buying “silk” bandhani on the street; always ask if the fabric is pure silk or art silk (artificial). Genuine handmade bandhani will have small, pinched points where the thread was tied, which you can feel with your fingers.

6. Dine at 360 Rooftop Restaurant

No Jamnagar weekend is complete without an evening at the 360 Rooftop Restaurant. Order the Gujarati thali, watch the sunset, and enjoy the panoramic views as the city lights up below.

Our rooftop offers the best vantage point in the city, allowing you to dine under the open sky. The restaurant opens for dinner from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM. While the thali is a favourite, the menu also features North Indian and Continental options for those wanting a break from local cuisine.

7. Walk Through Darbargadh

The old royal court complex offers a fascinating glimpse into Jamnagar’s princely past. The Kathiawadi architectural details — carved wooden balconies, stone jharokhas, and arched gateways — are best explored on foot.

Look for the section known as ‘Tilamedi’, where the coronation of the Jam Saheb kings traditionally took place. While the 2001 earthquake damaged parts of the complex, the surrounding area remains the heart of the old city. A walk here connects you to Willington Crescent, a curved shopping arcade built by Jam Ranjitsinhji that still bustles with local commerce.

8. Taste Street Food at Bedi Gate

The street food scene around Bedi Gate and Town Hall Road is legendary. Sample dabeli, kachori, gathiya, and pani puri from vendors who have been perfecting their recipes for generations.

You must try the ‘Dry Fruit Kachori’ from Jain Vijay Farsan, a local institution famous for this sweet and spicy delicacy. For a savoury breakfast, H.J. Vyas near the Central Bank is renowned for its Gathiya and Jalebi. Finish your food tour with a ‘Ghughra,’ a Jamnagar speciality similar to a dumpling, served with spicy chutney.

9. Visit the Marine National Park

If you have a full day, arrange a trip to the Marine National Park in the Gulf of Kutch. India’s first marine national park features coral reefs, sea turtles, and diverse marine life.

We strongly advise checking the tide timings before you go. Unlike other parks, you explore Narara Reef by walking on the seabed during low tide.

  • Location: Narara Reef (accessible by car, approx. 55 km from Jamnagar).
  • Permit: Obtainable at the forest office entry gate.
  • Essential: Wear thick-soled shoes or sandals; the coral reef can be sharp and slippery.
  • Guide: A mandatory guide (approx. ₹300) will help you spot octopuses, pufferfish, and sea anemones that blend perfectly into the reef.

10. End with High Tea at Aram Restaurant

Before you depart, stop by Aram Restaurant for high tea (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). The freshly made samosas, kachoris, cakes, and masala chai provide a delightful farewell to your Jamnagar weekend.

Our heritage ambiance sets the perfect mood for reflecting on your trip. We serve these snacks hot and fresh, offering a final taste of Jamnagar’s hospitality before you head to the airport or railway station.
